As I looked out of the window, the wet, desolate streets of the city rested in silence as the starry black sky wept over it. Apart from the occasional deafening barking of dogs, the house was perfectly quite. It was the common scene after midnight where everyone was deep in their sleep except for me busy doing my homework. ” Ha! Ha! Ha!” A burst of laughter followed by loud voices distracted me from my work. I could sense the laughter was not the ordinary laughter of joy or happiness but the ones that were deep, hoarse and only could be heard when a person achieved contentment after completing a sinister act. It was coming from inside the house. I stealthily crept to the room where the noises where coming. Curiously, I attempted to peek into the room but to no avail as the door was closed. My arms trembled and my heart beat with tremendous power as I reached for the door knob.
Turning the door knob, the rusty hinges of the door squeaked like fingernails on a dusty chalkboard. I stopped immediately, fearing that the creaking sound would have alerted whatever that was inside the room. The noise from inside continued and I exerted pressure to gently open the door. To my astonishment I detected an inexplicable figure seated on a throne-like chair. He had mysterious midnight eyes. His arms dangled down the sides of the chair. His nails were like claws of a lion; sharp enough to pierce through the heart of a human. His cloak whipped in the icy breeze revealing his bony figure.
I could hear my pulse beating in my years. My thoughts ran wild, thinking of all the possible reasons the creature was in my house. The creature called out a familiar name loudly, then an argument broke out acrimoniously. I realised that besides the creature, there was another person in the room, someone that I knew. I pushed the door that was ajar slightly wider and could feel the warmth on the door knob along with sweat that gave out a metallic scent. I peeped into the room. In front of the creature knelt a young man. As I focused my eyes on him again, I realised that he was no other person – he was my father. Yet, he was not the friendly and cheerful figure that I used to see in the morning but an enigmatical and esoteric person that was full of secrets.

A rush of adrenaline raced up my blood. I had to go closer. I needed answers. At that moment, the door was opened wide enough for me to pass through. Suddenly, there was a sudden silence. My legs gave way and involuntarily revealed myself to the creature. In time I realised that the creature was miles out of depth of being human. He gradually turned his head towards me. Standing behind the door, I dared not eye him for fear of being turned into a statue by Medusa. My brain was frozen.
Praying while listening attentively to every single footstep in the room, I closed my eyes tight while hoping that the creature would not attack me. Then, there was a strident voice by the sound of something groaning in agonizing pain. Speechless, I took a gander at the room with the door wide open. The creature was stabbed with a knife and my father stood there beside it. The laughter and loud voices that my father was having with the creature minutes ago had turned into complete silence. Looking at my quizzical face, my bloodshot-eyed dad grabbed me violently and slammed the door right behind me. I dared not asked or think of what happened but just carried on life as usual after then.
